Day 6 Summary (India’s performance) and Day 7 schedule of Indian Athletes in Action

Day 6 was a disappointment as three athletes and in Badminton Doubles event India lost both of its first group match although in the singles match India won all three matches and in the Men’s Hockey group stage match India lost against Netherlands. In Tennis India move to Quarter finals as Sania/Boppanna register a win. Golf event continues to happen on day 7 and results are awaited.

Day 6 - Summary
Golf:
Men’s Individual: Round 1
Anirban Lahiri and SSP Chawrasia

At the end of Day 1 SSP Chawrasia is tied 27 with 71 points and Anirban Lahiri is tied 50 with 74 points. Let us see what happens on the day 7 when they continue to perform.

Badminton:
Women’s Doubles: India vs Japan
Jwala Gutta/ Ashwini Ponnapa lost to Matsutomo / Takahashi (JPN) by 15-21 and 10-21

Men’s Doubles: India vs Indonesia
Manu Attri / B. Sumeeth Reddy lost to Ahsan / Setiawan (INA) by 18-21 and 13-21

Women’s Singles:

Saina won against Lohanny Vicente (Brazil) by 21-17, 21-17.

Men’s Singles:
Srikanth won against Lino (Mexico) by 21-11, 21-17

Hockey:
Men’s Group: India vs Netherlands

India Lost the match 1-2. Add to the result India played one of the best games in recent times. What a match it was, Simply the best team lost the match. Sreejesh and Raghunath are not just players but a Wall in the Indian defense. We may have lost against Germany and Netherlands but the fact is that both teams were made to sweat it out against the Indian defense which was not the case years before. This Indian team has what it takes to get to later stages in the competition and I am sure there will be enough reasons for Indian fans to smile based on the Hockey team performance. The move to bring in Raghunath as sweeper keeper and remove Sreejesh is not just a move, it is equivalent to Vaan Gaal (Netherlands Football manager) to Substitute Goal Keeper minutes before Penalty shoot out. This proves the team and the Coach are gutsy enough to think in direction to win the medal. I hope so and so does many of the fans.

Women’s Group: India vs USA
India lost the match 3-0 which means India is out of the knockout stages. There is a slightest chance of India making to the Knockout stages if India wins the final match against Argentina and Japan either losing or Draw against Australia. Hope India does win and if it does then!!!

Boxing:
Men’s 56Kg, Round of 32: Shiv Thapa vs Robeisy (Cuba)

Shiv Thapa lost to the cuban Robeisy 0-3 to be eliminated. It was an heartbreak but the fact is that Shiv was handed a tough draw where he went on to meet the world champion. Anyways well played shiv.

Archery:
In the Archery Competition Indian Medal hopeful’s Deepika Kumari and Bombayla Devi suffered an elimination in the pre quarter finals. Well Played Deepika and Bombayla, This experience will definitely help you in future and we will wait for your performance again in 2020,Thank you Very much.

Bombayla Devi lost to Valencia 2-6 (26-28; 26-23; 26-23; 27-28; 23-25) and gets eliminated.

Deepika lost to Tanya 0-6 (27-28; 26-29; 27-30) and gets eliminated.

Day 5 Summary (India’s performance) and Day 6 schedule of Indian Athletes in Action

Day 5 was quite a mixed bag with several disappointments and few good victories to cheer. But when we deeply look into the victories they are actually much significant because all those who won yesterday can be a potential medal winner. We were in fray for 6 events yesterday out of which we won in three events and progressed further and rest all ended up in defeats. Let us review the day five events and look through the schedule for day 6.

Shooting:
Men’s 50m Pistol
Prakash Nanjappa and Jitu Rai both failed to advance to the finals of the event eventually crashing out in the qualification rounds. Prakash Scores 547 points with rank of 25 and Jitu Rai scored 554 Points with the rank of 12 which was not enough to progress to Finals of the event.

Jitu Rai had spoken to media post hi defeat,” I let my country down and I have excuse to make”.
Well Jitu you made us proud my reaching the Olympics and you will do better in the Asian Games, Commonwealth Games, Shooting Championship and appear back for medal in 2020 Olympics. We have faith in you.

Field Hockey Women’s
India vs Australia match ended with Australia winning 6-1. Australians were ruthless in their attack and only thing Indian team could do was to get one goal back. Till the half time the score line was 2-0 but second half proved fatal to India. With this loss India is in the brink of elimination and in order to try to reach the knockout stages India has to win rest of the two matches. All the best Ladies!

Boxing:
Men’s Light Welterweight (64Kg)
Manoj Kumar faced Evaldas Petrauskas (Lithuania) in the round of 32 and he won the round 2-1. Manoj went through his instincts with Defense against a very tough and hard hitting boxer in his first bout through which he won the First round. He continued the same which eventually bought him the victory. Just to remind you all Evaldas Petrauskas was Bronze medalist in the same category in the London Olympics. Now Manoj will meet Fazliddin Gaibnazarov of Uzbekistan who is also a tough opponent in the Round of 16.

Weightlifting:
Men’s 77Kg
Sathish Sivalingam was seeded in the group b of the event in which he lifted 329Kg which was his career best to finish 4th hence he was unable to qualify for the Finals.

Judo:
Men’s Individual
In this rare event, Indian Avatar Singh met Pople Misenga (Refugee) who is from Congo in the round of 32 in which, Avatar lost 0-1 eventually to be eliminated. Well tried Lad, we are proud of you.

Archery:
Women’s Individual
Bombayla Devi met Laurence Baldauff (Austria) in the Round of 64 in which Veteran Bombayla devi won 6-2. In the First set Austrian won it 27-24 but Bombayla rallied back winning three back to back sets to win the contest (28-23; 27-23; 25-24). In the Round of 32 Bombayla met Tougher opponent Lin of Taiwan and Of course Bombayla took to honours to win 6-2 (27-24; 27-24; 26-27; 28-26). With the win Bombayla qualifies for pre quarters and she will meet Valencia of Mexico.

Deepika Kumari met Kristine Esebua (Gerogia) in the Round of 64 in which Deepika won 6-4 (27-26; 29-29; 30-27; 27-29; 29-29). Of course it was a hard fought win for deepika who kept her cool to complete the bidding. Then Deepika went on to meet Sartori of Italy which again she won 6-2 (24-27; 29-26; 28-26; 28-27) to reach the round of 16. In the Pre quarters Deepika will meet Tan ya Ting of Taiwan who was ranked 4 in the Qualification. Let us hope deepika wins and reaches quarter finals.

Day 4 Summary (India’s performance) and Day 5 schedule of Indian Athletes in Action

Day 4 was a satisfying day for the Indian Olympians and the supporters. There were wins and few defeats also. But overall the day was full of satisfying results which makes one happy. What makes the day satisfying is that, in the events like Rowing where Indian was able to Finish fourth and qualify for the Semi finals (Although he is out of medal hopes). But one of the Medal Hopeful Heena sidhu did bow out of the qualification which makes the day sour but we do have enough wins to celebrate the day. Let us go through how the day happened to be for the Indian contingent.
Archery: We are Still There
Atanu Das: Men’s Individual event: two rounds and victory all around.
Atanu First met Jitbahadur Muktan of Nepal in round of 64 and won 6-0 (29-26; 29-24; 30-26). Atanu was bound to win the contest and as expected he won it. In the Round of 32 Atanu met Adrian Puentas            of Cuba and won 6-4 ( 28-25; 29-26; 26-27; 27-28; 29-28). In the round of 32 Atanu won first two sets but the Cuban came back impressive and won the next two thereby contest going into the final fifth set where Atanu rallied to win the round and move into round of 16 or pre-quarters where he will meet South Korean archer Lee Seung-Yun who was part of the Korean team which won the Gold medal in the team event in this edition of Olympics. Round of 16 will be held tomorrow.
Hockey: I am Back
Indian Men's Hockey Team came back strong after the loss to Germany to win the match against Argentina 2-1. Goals from the Manipur duo set the victory for the Indian Team. Chinglensana Singh scored from the penalty corner with an impressive shot (though he usually doesn’t take corner or he is a Drag Flicker) at 8th Minute of the game setting the tempo for the team. Right from the start until middle of second quarter India was quite aggressive in the approach and India went into break leading 1-0 which was a morale booster. Back into second half Kothajit Singh scored an impressive field goal (India’s first field goal in this Olympics) making 2-0 at 35th Minute. If we have to recap about Kothajit he was the Lone scorer in the regular time, which ended 1-1 against Pakistan and the same match India won 4-2 in a penalty shootout and bagged the Gold medal in the Asian Games2014. But Argentina still pressed hard and they were able to pull back one at 49th minute by pelliet and from there Indian Players were playing more defensive. Kudos to sreejesh who was fantastic as an custodian to ensure the victory yesterday. With that victory we are close to qualify for the quarter final which has not happened post 1980 Olympics.
Rowing: We are Proud of you! Medal doesn’t matter, Go far as you can
Dattu Baban Bhokanal was in quarter finals in the Rowing event for the Men’s Single Sculls yesterday. He was to participate in the Heats 4. As the event started Dattu did well and maintained 3rd position till 200m but as in progressed he got pushed to 4th position and eventually finishing in the 4th position meaning he will not be in the Medal contention. Dattu finished the race with impressive time of 6:59.89 and he will be participating in the Semi Finals C/D event. Nevertheless we are proud about our lad and hope he goes till Finals of C/D event. Just for the sake of readers Dattu started to practice rowing only after 2012 Olympics, the only rower from India for Rio Olympics and Ninth Rower from India in the Olympics.
Shooting: Disappointment
Heena Sidhu was the only Lady Shooter left in the shooting competition from India and she was in fray for the 25m Pistol Event. Unfortunately she scored 576 points and ranked 20 meaning she was not able to qualify for the Finals.

Boxing: Indian Bout Starts
Vikas Krishnan started off with a flyer winning over his American Opponent Charles Conwell 3-0 in the middleweight category thereby qualifying for the round of 16. In the Round of 16 Vikas will meet Önder Şipal of Turkey which will be held on 12th August. Vikas is one of the bright prospects for the Medal finish.

Schedule for Today:

Shooting:
Men’s 50m Pistol: Jitu Rai and Prakash Nanjappa
5:30 PM IST qualification and finals at 8:30 PM IST.

Day 3 Summary (India’s performance) and Day 4 schedule of Indian Athletes in Action

Day three of the olympics was an total disaster for the indian contingent. We were on fray with 7 events and I am sad to inform that all lost on various events. It feels like as though I have lost in the competitions. Nevertheless there are events coming up and there are multiple Olympians to participate so lets rally back behind our contingent.

Archery: Lost but not down
Laxmirani Majhi: Women’s Individual event: Lost to Longova of Slovakia with a score of 1-7 and gets eliminated from the competition. But We do have Deepika Kumari and Veteran Bombayla Devi alive in the same competition.

Hockey: Not the End
Indian Men's Hockey Team lost to Germany 1-2. At second quarter Wellen from Germany scored the first goal and in the same quarter Rupinder singh equalized for india. Then at the penultimate second of the full time Ruhr scored the winning goal for Germany. This performance of India needs to be noted as they were able to contain a team like Germany and since there are multiple games in order to enter quarter finals the performance against Germany should be a benchmark atleast.

Indian Hockey Women's team lost to Great Britain 3-0. Two goals were scored in the second quarter and one in the third quarter by Brits. Nevertheless still we 3 games left so we can rally back.

Shooting: So Near yet So Far
Abhinav Bindra Lost the medal by a whisker and finished fourth in the 10m Air Rifle Scoring 163.8.

Gagan Narang failed to qualify for the finals after scoring 621.7 points.

Kynan Chenai and Manavjit Singh Sandhu continued the qualification hopes but since they didn’t accumulate enough on previous day (they scored 67 and 68 with ranking of 20 and 17), Both were unable to qualify for finals with points of 114 and 115 and rank of 19 and 16.

Swimming: Well Tried.
Sajan Prakash: Men’s 200m Butterfly: Sajan didn’t qualify to semi finals after clocking 1:59:37 and ranked 28 in heats. Well Done we are proud of you.

Shivani Kataria: Women’s 200m Freestyle: Shivani also didn’t qualify for the semi finals after clocking 2:09:30 and ranked 41 in heats. Come back with heads high.

Day 2 Summary (India’s performance) and Day 3 schedule of Indian Athletes in Action

On the third day of the Olympics, India has done reasonably well and of course there are disappointments. But nevertheless the performance needs to be appreciated. Let us first go through the results as mentioned below.

 Archery: Heartbreak after Valor

Deepika Kumari, Bombayla Devi and Laxmirani Majhi: Women’s Team event: Lost to Russia in Quarter Finals. Actually Indian Ladies did exceedingly well just to get eliminated in the tie breaker. Nevertheless this is one of the performance to be noted as the individual events are yet to happen and all three ladies are still in Fray.

Hockey: You score we also Score

Indian women’s Hockey team took on Japan in the First group game. Japan took 2-0 lead but the possession and attacks were always from India. At right time Rani pulled one back in 3rd quarter and from there in just 8 minutes Lilima scored to make it even and earn a point. For Indian Hockey there is light at the end of the tunnel.

Gymnastics Artistic: Prodigy

Dipa Karmakar has qualified for the Vault Finals (a Feat no Indian has managed till date). Of course she was unable to progress in Individual All round, but performing in Vault is a rare feat and she did the same with amazing effort. Hope She does well in the Finals.

Shooting: Disappointment

Kynan Chenai and Manavjit Singh Sandhu were in fray for the trap event were they scored 67 and 68 with ranking of 20 and 17 at the moment. The event will continue today and let us see if they can enter finals.

Opening ceremony and day 1 (India’s performance) report and Schedule for Day 2

Even before the opening ceremony was to begin there were few events lined up and of course one for Indian Athlete in Archery sport. Talking about the opening ceremony it was a typical samba style spectacle and no words to describe the way the torch was lit. I would still compare Rio opening ceremony with Beijing and every Olympics have their own unique culture depicted.

Coming to the performance of the Indian contingent on first two days (5th and 6th) it has been quite disappointing and the results so far are mentioned below.
